Our Team

Our Work Place Injury team deals with work based accidents as well claims for a range of occupational diseases (other than noise induced hearing loss). These include a significant number of asbestos related disease claims mainly mesothelioma. You’ll join Roger Maddocks’ team who for over 35 years has specialised in compensation claims for individuals who’ve suffered injury in an accident at work or developed an occupational illness. Roger "is hugely experienced and an excellent tactical thinker, with no fear of taking on difficult cases.” - Chambers & Partners, 2020. The team handles a high proportion of litigated cases, many of which are dealt with on an expedited basis in the High Court. The personal injury teams at Irwin Mitchell don’t just deal with compensation claims. We also work with our clients and their families to ensure all of their rehabilitation needs are met. It’s a unique, bespoke approach that really makes a difference to people whose lives have been turned upside down by injury or occupational illness.

Our recent work involves:

  • £45,000 for a metal press operator who had to have two fingers amputated after his hand was crushed.
  • Six figure sum for a construction worker who was seriously injured when he fell from scaffolding.
  • Five figure compensation settlement for a supermarket worker who aggravated an existing back injury unloading a delivery.
Your Role

You’ll have the opportunity to get involved in an interesting and diverse caseload, right from the beginning you’ll play a key part in securing justice for our clients and making a real difference in their lives. You’ll have the confidence to hit the ground-running and have the ability to work independently on litigated cases. Given the nature of the work you’ll work with vulnerable clients, and your role will be highly rewarding, but you’ll have to be resilient and calm whilst also putting your client’s needs first at all times. As a member of the team, you will play an important role in the investigation and litigation on complex cases, working as part of a team to maximise client damages and optimise costs recovery. This is ideally a Newcastle based role however, we’re keen to accommodate what’s best for you, so we can be flexible on location and are open to discussions about remote working.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Take instructions from clients and give legal advice, including obtaining evidence and, where appropriate, pursuing litigation, to achieve appropriate resolutions for the clients.
  • Review cases and other relevant matters with your supervisor to ensure quality legal advice is provided in compliance with the firm’s policies and procedures.

What we’ll need from you:

  • 0-5 years personal injury experience ideally in Occupational Disease Claims (other than NIHL), Asbestos Related Disease or historic sexual abuse claims
  • The work requires very strong technical skills.
  • Proven experience of handling your own cases, including your own litigated cases
  • A clear enthusiasm for this area of law and a commitment to securing the best outcomes for your clients whilst working under pressure
  • An ability to work with empathy and integrity – giving excellent client care
  • An open-minded and pioneering approach – always thinking how can we do things better
