Job description

In House Solicitor (2434)

We’re a national law firm with a local reach. Our philosophy is ‘Expert Hand, Human Touch’ – something you’ll find in the way we work with our clients and how we support our teams. But, we’re more than just a law firm – we’re a team, working together to help individuals and businesses navigate life’s ups and downs.

Whichever team you join, working here you’ll feel a part of our friendly and inclusive environment. We’ll value you for who you are and what you bring. We support each other and push boundaries to achieve incredible things, and make a real difference to our clients and communities.

The work we do has been recognised in the awards we’ve won. We’re committed to being even better, and our awards help to show we’re on the right track.

We recognise that the office 9-5 isn’t for everyone. That’s why we’ve introduced ‘Flexible by Choice’. Whether it’s working from home, in our offices, or a combination of the both, we trust each other to support our clients, colleagues and communities at the right time, in the right way.

Our Team

As part of the Group Services Function, the GC Team not only helps to keep our team and our staff safe (on the right side of legal and regulatory compliance, GDPR, and law generally) but it also does exactly what the GC and Co Sec teams in our business clients and private wealth offices do too. The team consists of lawyers and other professionals who support the IM Group business areas, under the leadership of Bruce Macmillan, GC. This is a new team established in 2018 and is a great example of IM being at the front of good practice and innovation and it brings together the skills and expertise needed by IM Group businesses to function effectively and to support the core Group 2022 objectives.

Your Role

This is an opportunity to experience working in an ‘in-house’ environment. As a member of the in-house legal team you will be working on projects which are shaping the way the Group does business and which will have an impact on the way we work as lawyers.

What You'll Be Doing

The work will be doing commercial contracts law, helping to review, draft and negotiate a wide range of business critical agreements in areas such as IT, outsourcing and client services, research and preparing advice. You will be working on tools for contract hub products, training materials and guidance to share ‘best of kind’ documents with the wider firm and help to record and monitor the large and varied range of contractual arrangements across the group. You will also help manage ‘outsourcing’ of other legal work to expert advisers and to help manage and develop junior lawyers in the team.

What We're Looking For

The skills needed for the in-house solicitor role are likely to have been developed in a commercial law environment, principally contract drafting and negotiating high value agreements. You must be an exceptional communicator as you will be dealing with clients, who are also your colleagues; investing in and developing these working relationships to ensure there is an awareness of the in-house team’s capabilities across the business.

You will be commercially minded, drawing upon your previous experience to challenge the business in a tactful and professional manner in order to drive continuous improvement. You will have a degree in Law or a business related subject or relevant post graduate qualification as well as previous experience of working in a professional services environment.

What we can offer you
  • 25 days annual leave, with the opportunity to buy additional leave
  • Two fundraising days in a year to give back to the community (fully paid!)
  • Westfield Health membership, offering discounted leisure and travel and refunds on medical services

We also offer a huge number of well-being initiatives to encourage positive mental health both in and out of the workplace as well as flexible working options to ensure that you are fully supported to work the way that best suits you. Our social responsibility programme is fundamental to who we are. We’re committed to being a diverse and inclusive workplace where our colleagues can flourish. We have a range of groups to celebrate our people across sexuality, disability, age, gender and culture.

We welcome applications from all diversity groups and backgrounds. We’re committed to enabling everyone to thrive and understanding and celebrating our differences is a key part of that. We’re proud of our work on the Disability Confident scheme, on the Race At Work Charter and as Stonewall Diversity Champions. We also have a range of networks for LGBT+, disability, generations, gender, social mobility, ethnicity, faith and culture to celebrate our people and to enable everyone to thrive.
