We are looking to add a talented Paralegal to our Public Law & Human Rights team based in Sussex 

As a Paralegal in our Public Law & Human Rights team, you will play a crucial role in supporting our solicitors with a range of legal tasks. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on impactful cases, contribute to meaningful legal work, and grow your career in a supportive and collaborative environment. You will be expected to work both from home and in our Brighton and Gatwick offices

 

Our Team

Our Public Law & Human rights team undertake a range of work in the areas of judicial review, civil liberties (including inquests and actions against the police), education, social care, healthcare and medical treatment, mental capacity and Court of Protection welfare disputes. Our lawyers are experts in their field.

Our Public Law and Human Rights department is ranked as a leader in a range of fields in both the Chambers & Partners and the Legal 500 directories many of our solicitors are ranked individually.

We are instructed in interesting and often high profile, cutting-edge cases. We have forged a national reputation for our work on test cases. We have a national reach, with public law teams in ten offices across the country.

We hold Legal Aid Agency contracts in public law, community care and actions against the police and are also instructed by privately funded individuals, professional associations and institutions including national and local charities and other voluntary organisations. We work closely with our colleagues and teams in Irwin Mitchell to provide a holistic service to our clients.

Your Role and What You'll Be Doing

This role involves representing vulnerable individuals, including children, women in detention, and victims of trafficking, in judicial review challenges against central and local government. The successful candidate will also handle private law actions against public bodies such as the police, local authorities, and the Home Office for breaches of Human Rights Act 1998.

  • Assisting in bringing judicial review challenges against central and local government on behalf of vulnerable individuals.
  • Assisting in bringing claims for civil damages under the Human Rights Act against public bodies
  • Managing and organising case files efficiently, ensuring all legal processes and documentation are handled accurately and timely.
  • Managing legal aid funding on case files.
  • Performing administrative duties such as drafting legal documents, correspondence, and maintaining case management systems.
  • Keep up to date with changes in relevant law and practice and attend appropriate training events to ensure up to date legal knowledge and best practice.
  • Achieve time recording and fee income targets to ensure profitable working.
About You
  • A strong commitment to social justice and human rights.
  • Previous paralegal experience is preferable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A proactive approach and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage a diverse caseload.
