Your Role and What You'll Be Doing
As a Paralegal within our Medical Negligence team, you will join a team led by Lindsay Tomlinson, Partner, supporting several case handlers within the team. You’ll play a key role supporting on complex, high value claims while delivering an exceptional client experience. You’ll gain hands-on exposure to a broad range of medical negligence matters, working closely with clients, experts and Counsel
Your responsibilities will include:
- Acting as a first point of contact for new and existing clients, taking initial instructions and gathering key information with empathy and professionalism.
- Supporting fee earners in the day-to-day management of cases, ensuring files progress efficiently and in line with procedural and regulatory requirements.
- Assisting with the investigation of claims, including obtaining, reviewing and organising medical records and other key evidence.
- Liaising with medical experts, Counsel and other third parties, and supporting the organisation of conferences and meetings.
- Preparing documentation to support litigation processes, including court bundles and instructions to Counsel.
- Assisting with hearing preparation and, where appropriate, attending court hearings and conferences.
- Maintaining accurate case management records, time recording and supporting the achievement of team financial and performance targets.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues to contribute to team objectives, sharing knowledge and supporting a positive team culture.
- Keeping up to date with developments in medical negligence law and practice, undertaking relevant training as required.
- Supporting wider business development and client engagement activities, where appropriate.
Essential:
- A Law degree (LLB or equivalent) is essential.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and confidently engage with clients in sensitive situations.
- Demonstrable empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence, particularly when supporting clients through complex and often distressing experiences.
- Highly organised and proactive, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, particularly when handling documentation and evidence.
- A collaborative team player, with the ability to build strong relationships with colleagues, clients and external stakeholders.
- A positive, enthusiastic and “can‑do” approach, with a willingness to learn and develop quickly.
Desirable:
- Previous experience or exposure to medical negligence / clinical negligence work.
- Experience gained within a legal or professional services environment, such as a law firm, legal clinic, medical or similar setting.
- Familiarity with litigation processes, including document preparation, evidence gathering or court procedures.
- Experience liaising with clients, experts or third parties in a professional setting.
- A clear interest in developing a long-term career in medical negligence.
