The Defendant team is a niche specialist team within Irwin Mitchell LLP. We are a successful, thriving and growing team. We represent a large number of European insurers, defending claims brought against them. We deal with cases arising out of accidents in England and Wales, and accidents abroad but litigated through the courts of England and Wales. We are a small, friendly and supportive team, with the benefit of being part of the wider International Personal Injury team.
As a fee earner working within the Defendant team, you will run a varied caseload, subject to supervision. This is a busy and demanding role, where duties are diverse and no two days are the same. You will deal with a range of fast track and some multi track cases, from minor whiplash or credit hire claims to more serious injury claims. Many cases involve the application of foreign law. You’ll liaise regularly with opposing parties, courts, medical experts, and foreign law experts, both over the telephone and in writing. We have strong links and a close relationship with our insurer clients, and you will need to learn to understand their requirements, and to work closely with them. You will need a professional approach at all times. You’ll be juggling tasks such as preparing pleadings, advising clients, undertaking legal and quantum research, attending Court hearings and conferences with Counsel. To meet your monthly targets you’ll need to be experienced in multi-tasking and keeping to tight deadlines. Whilst planning and prioritising will be the key to your success, you’ll also need to be flexible and quick to respond to requests at short notice. You’ll be experienced in following set guidelines and processes, but with the ability and confidence to use your own judgement where required. This role will provide the candidate with excellent experience in a forward thinking and dynamic team.
We are looking for enthusiastic and committed candidates with experience in Defendant RTA claims, mainly fast track but also some multi track. Ideally you will have experience of dealing with jurisdiction and applicable law issues in international cases i.e. where the accident is in England and Wales but involving drivers based abroad, or the accident itself was abroad.
If you thrive on being busy and can adapt well to new challenges, then we’ll give you all the training and support you’ll need to help you succeed in this highly rewarding role. You must be IT literate and attentive to detail, with proven expertise in client care.
RESPONSIBILITIES/KEY RESULTS AREAS
Foreign language skills would also be helpful, but are not essential.
As this is an FTC the preferred candidate would need to start immediately.
