Your Role

Working as a Lead Data Engineer, you’ll be responsible for inspiring best practice for data products and services, building up the data engineering capability by providing technical leadership and career development for the engineers, and for working with other senior colleagues to identify, plan, develop and deliver data services to the business. You’ll implement the data strategy, and help define the governance model needed across the business to support our data maturity. Given the nature of this role, you’ll also be responsible for managing the data needs of multiple teams, systems and products as well as provide technical and operational leadership to ensure data governance and data quality remain front of mind during the process.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Leading a skilled multi-discipline Data Engineering team, ensuring the appropriate operating model is adopted.
  • Shaping, building and adhering to data engineering standard methodology & principles.
  • Providing subject matter expertise to the Technical Design Authority & Data Steering Committee to ensure Data requirements & risks are considered.
  • Supporting the production of and adherence to Data design patterns & guardrails.
  • Leading the building, testing, maintenance and adoption of new data platforms, including data pipelines and data architecture.
  • Supporting the decommissioning of legacy platform and effective migration to new data platform.
  • Attracting & retaining talent, leading the Data Engineering team to continually evolve & improve.
  • Carrying out a key business partnering role maintaining relationship with business product owners to ensure data service requirements are well-understood and prioritised appropriately.
  • Evaluating business needs and objectives to ensure the right Data capabilities are available to support the delivery of business growth strategies.
  • Identifying and implementing ways to improve data governance, data quality and data management processes to ensure the right data is readily available and accessible to the business.
  • Collaborating with data scientists and data analysts to deploy sophisticated analytics programs, machine learning, predictive & prescriptive modeling and statistical methods using our modern data platform.
  • Identifying opportunities for workflow automation to improve efficiency and quality control.
  • Working with stakeholders to capture data requirements & provide updates on Data Platform where necessary.
  • Assisting the GDO in developing and maintaining the Data Strategy.
What We're Looking For
  • A significant background working in Data Engineering, ideally you’ll have a degree in Computer Science, Statistics or another quantitative field.
  • A strong understanding of data architecture, data warehousing, data aggregation and machine learning.
  • Previous experience of leading data engineers through the data lifecycle.
  • Technical tools expertise in Data Engineering and Data Governance, particularly Azure related (e.g. Azure Synapse Analytics, Apache Spark).
  • Fluent in programming languages such as SQL, and Python.
  • Strong communications skills, both written and verbal to be able to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Strong influencing and collaboration skills, this will include the ability to influence senior stakeholders across the business and technology teams.
