Job description
International Serious Injury Solicitor (6359)
We’re a national law firm with a local reach. Our legal experts are here for you. Whether it’s personal or business, we understand that everyone’s situation is different. But we’re more than just a law firm – we’re a team of people working together to help individuals and businesses navigate life’s ups and downs. Working here you’ll feel a part of our friendly and inclusive environment.
We’ll value you for who you are and what you bring. We support each other and push boundaries to achieve incredible things and make a real difference to our clients and communities.
We're always looking to support our colleagues to work in a way that works best for them and everyone else, including our clients, the business and the regulators. Please speak to a member of our Recruitment and Onboarding team for more information.
Every year, thousands of people are injured in accidents or are taken seriously ill while abroad. We help clients pursue compensation claims following accidents, injuries or illness sustained whilst travelling or working abroad. Our lawyers have helped thousands to claim compensation following illness or accidents abroad in a wide range of circumstances, including road traffic accidents, food poisoning and gastric illness and accidents at sea.
Our International Serious Injury Team in Manchester deals exclusively with serious injury claims with the added complexity of cross-border litigation. We pride ourselves on making a real difference and helping people to live a life as full as possible after a serious injury. This is litigation of the most challenging nature and regularly involves making new law or pushing the boundaries of existing law as the cases concerned deal with complex issues of applicable law, liability and jurisdictional arguments.
The International Serious Injury team acts exclusively for individuals who have sustained injuries as a result of accidents abroad, or foreign residents who are injured whilst visiting the UK. The team deals with employers’ liability, package holiday, aviation, cruise, RTA, clinical negligence and public liability matters. Many of our clients have suffered catastrophic injuries and the role will involve some travel to meet clients and family members and to attend Court hearings and conferences with experts and / or counsel.
We are seeking a talented Solicitor (approximately 2–6 years' PQE) to join our highly regarded International Serious Injury team in Manchester. This is an exciting opportunity to work on complex, high-value personal injury claims within a leading, specialist practice. The role offers excellent opportunities for career progression and development within a growing team, making it ideal for someone looking to further specialise in International Serious Injury work.
You will work with Mike Hagan, a Senior Associate, in our International Serious Injury team, and your role will involve but is not limited to:
· Taking instructions from clients and providing clear, practical legal advice
· Managing and progressing high-value, complex international injury claims
· Running your own caseload of matters
· Working collaboratively on group actions and multi-claimant cases
· Meeting time recording and fee income targets
· Attending and contributing to team and practice area meetings
· Keeping up to date with developments in relevant law and practice
The role operates on a hybrid basis with a minimum of two office days per week, including at least one day in the Manchester office
- We anticipate the successful candidate will have around 2–6 years' PQE, although we would welcome applications from candidates outside this range who can demonstrate the required skills and experience.
- Strong experience in Serious Injury work
- A proven track record in multi-track Serious Injury work either from a Claimant or Defendant perspective. Experience in travel litigation/cross border claims is highly desirable but not essential, as training and supervision will be provided.
- Experience in handling complex and/or high-value claims
- Excellent client care skills, with empathy and a compassionate approach
- A proactive, enthusiastic, and team-oriented mindset
- Strong organisational skills and commercial awareness
- 25 days holidays as standard plus bank holidays - You can ‘buy’ up to 35hrs of extra holiday too.
- Generous and flexible pension schemes.
- Volunteering days – Two days of volunteering every year for a cause of your choice (fully paid)
- Westfield Health membership, offering refunds on medical services alongside our Aviva Digital GP services.
We also offer a wide range of well-being initiatives to encourage positive mental health both in and out of the workplace and to make sure you’re fully supported. This includes our Flexible by Choice programme which gives our colleagues more choice over a hybrid way of working subject to role, team and client requirements.
We have been ranked in the Best Workplaces for Wellbeing for Large Organisations for 2026!
Our responsible business programmes are fundamental to who we are and our purpose. We’re committed to being a diverse and inclusive workplace where our colleagues can flourish, and we have established a number of inclusion network groups across our business to support this aim.
Our commitment to Social Responsibility, community investment activity and tackling climate change is a fundamental part of who we are. It’s made up of four strands: Our People, Our Community, Our Environment and Our Pro Bono.
As part of the Irwin Mitchell Group’s on-boarding process all successful applicants are required to complete the group’s employment screening process. This process helps to ensure that all new employees meet our standards in relation to honesty and integrity therefore protecting the interests of the Group, colleagues, clients, partners and other stakeholders.
We carry out pre employment screening to establish your eligibility to work in the UK, criminal record and financial checks with our trusted 3rd parties.
The employment screening process will fully comply with Data Protection and other applicable laws.
