Job description
Public Law & Human Rights Lawyer (6120)
You’ll join our nationally recognised Public Law and Human Rights department, working within our Civil Liberties special interest group. We advise and represent clients on a broad range of matters, including:
- Inquests
- False imprisonment, malicious prosecution and assault
- Claims under the Human Rights Act against police forces, local authorities and other public bodies
The department is highly ranked by Chambers & Partners and The Legal 500, with a number of lawyers individually recognised. We are instructed in interesting and often high‑profile cases and have a strong reputation for test case litigation.
From day one, you’ll work on a varied and challenging caseload, playing a key role in securing justice for clients and making a real difference. The work can involve vulnerable clients, so resilience, empathy and sound judgement are essential.
You will be involved in:
- Managing your own caseload and supporting partners and senior lawyers on complex and high‑value cases
- Bringing civil liberties claims, particularly actions against the police, local authorities and inquests
- Supervising and supporting junior colleagues
- Working closely with colleagues across the wider firm, including health and social care, education, personal injury and Court of Protection teams
- Contributing to business development and, where appropriate, media engagement with support from our press team
- Reviewing cases with your supervisor to ensure high‑quality legal advice
We hold Legal Aid Agency contracts in claims against public authorities, public law and community care, and also act for privately funded individuals and on CFAs. We encourage our lawyers to develop their own areas of interest.
We’re looking for a motivated Solicitor with experience in civil liberties, public law or human rights, particularly actions against the police, public bodies and inquests. You will be part of a collaborative national team, with public law specialists based across ten offices. This role can be based in any of our regional locations.
You will have:
- Experience managing a civil liberties caseload
- The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a national team
- Experience supervising junior colleagues, or a desire to take on supervisory responsibility
- Strong client care skills, commercial awareness and an interest in business development
We're proud of our values, and we're looking for people who share them
